The City of Selkirk takes pride in keeping our city clean – from the streets and boulevards to civic offices, sporting facilities, parks and playgrounds. We have adopted a new dual-stream system and containers that accept both garbage and recyclables are located throughout the city.
The City’s strategic plan makes environmental stewardship a priority and a two-bag garbage limit for curb-side pickup helps accomplish that. The City also offers curb-side recycling pickup, and has depots for household hazardous and electronic waste as well as used oil.

Recycling Collection Areas
If you live in the lighter blue shaded area, your recycling will be picked up on Tuesdays. Those who live in the darker blue area will have their recycling picked up on Thursdays.
Recyclables must be in the blue box and at the curb by 8 a.m. on your collection day.
|Each new household will receive one blue box from the City. Blue boxes can be picked up at the Operations Department at 739 Sophia Street. Extra blue boxes may be purchased from Home Hardware or Canadian Tire.|
|Apartment buildings will have recycling toters.Toters can be purchased at the Operations Department at 739 Sophia Street.They are sold through the City at cost.|

All containers should be rinsed and flattened where possible.

Solid Waste Collection Areas
If you live in the tan-coloured area, your garbage will be picked up on Mondays; if you live in the purple-coloured area, your garbage will be picked up on Wednesday and if you live in the grey-coloured area, your garbage will be picked up on Friday. Garbage must be put out for curbside collection by 8 a.m. on your garbage day.
Solid Waste Containers and Yard Waste
|2 bag/can limit. Residential premises will not be allowed more that 2 cans/bags of solid waste per residence.The maximum dimensions of a standard garbage can are 50 cm x 82 cm (20″ x 32″ – 124 litres)Garbage cans should not exceed 22 kg (50 lbs) in weight. Cans should have handles to facilitate handling.|

|Yard waste will be picked up year round. Residents are permitted to put out for collection unlimited bags of yard waste per week. Yard waste must be placed in transparent plastic bags having a maximum size of 89 cm x 127 cm (35″ x 50″). Bags must not exceed 22 kg (50 lbs) in weight.|
|Branches must be no longer than 1 metre (3 feet) long and bundled with string. Bundles of branches must not exceed 22 kg (50 lbs) in weight.|
Exceeding two-bag limit
Surcharge stickers can be purchased for occasions when you exceed the two bag/can limit. The sticker must be applied to the extra bag or can, or city staff will not pick them up.
Excess cans/bags of waste (over the limit of 2) may be put out for collection if a surcharge sticker has been applied. If it’s an extra can, put the sticker on the outside of the bag inside the can. If it’s an extra bag, put the sticker on the outside of the bag.
Surcharge stickers can be purchased for $2 each at Canada Safeway, Marketplace, Extra Foods and the Civic Office at 200 Eaton Ave.
The third and additional can/bag of waste without a sticker will not be collected.
Unacceptable material for curb-side pickup includes:
- construction/demolition waste
- excavation waste
- bulky waste
- metallic waste
- used tires
- used oil
- hazardous waste
The above materials, with the exception of hazardous waste are accepted at the Waste Transfer Station on Walker Avenue west of Hwy. 4.
In efforts to reduce the amount of organic waste going to the landfill, the City of Selkirk encourages residents to do backyard composting. Compost bins are available at the Operations Department at 739 Sophia Street for $40, taxes included.
The type of compost bin that is available through the City, called the “Earth Machine”, comes in three easy to assemble parts so that it fits inside most vehicles for transport.
Each Earth Machine includes a Home Composting Handbook to help get you started and information on how to maintain the compost material until it is ready for use. The end result compost is a nutrient rich “super soil” to add to gardens and lawns.

City of Selkirk employees also want to do their part in reducing organic waste being landfilled. All three of the office buildings have planned their own composting ritual. Fruit and vegetable scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds and yard waste from around the municipal buildings will be composted in a pilot program starting this fall. You’ll see the compost bins in action soon if you visit any of our three municipal buildings.
EcoCentre (Used Oil Depot)
The Waste Transfer Station is located on Walker Avenue west of Hwy. 4. The City of Selkirk, in conjunction with the Manitoba Association for Resource Recovery Corporation (MARRC), operates an EcoCentre at the transfer station for the purpose of collecting used oil, filters, oil containers and antifreeze.
Collect used oil from your vehicle, lawn mower, farm equipment or other machinery and place it in its original container. Do not contaminate the oil with other liquids. Solvents, paint thinner, leaches, antifreeze, gasoline, PCB’s, household chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, grease or water are not accepted at the EcoCentre. EcoCentre staff can provide information on where to take contaminated oil.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) & Electronics Waste (E-Waste)
Following the closure of the closure of Responsible Electronics Recycling (RER) depot located at 511 Robinson Ave on Dec. 31, 2018, E-Waste will be accepted year round at the City of Selkirk Transfer station located at Walker Avenue west of Hwy. 4
HHW will eventually be accepted as well but due to the Laws and regulations behind the hazardous materials and the licenses required, we are unable to accept the HHW until we have the license in place.
We are currently working on an expedited solution so that residents can utilize this service as soon as possible.
In the meantime, the Stonewall and Brady Landfills will accept the HHW until we receive our license. If you choose to not visit either of those locations, we ask that you hold on to your waste until we are able to accept it.
We will place an update here as soon as we are licensed.
There will be no drop off fees for this service
Transfer station and Public Works staff will monitor the electronics until they are picked up by Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA), an industry-led, not-for-profit organization that operates regulated recycling programs across Canada that ensure end-of-life electronics are handled in a safe, secure and environmentally-sound manner. EPRA has more than 2,000 authorized collection sites across Canada.
Once we obtain the licence to collect HHW, Product Care Association (PCA) will take HHW from the transfer station and ensure it doesn’t end up in the landfill. PCA has worked in Selkirk with RER since 2012 and we are happy to continue this relationship.
