There’s a recurring theme with many city events this summer, and it’s no different for the ever-popular Selkirk Port Market sponsored by Access Credit Union – it’s going back to the Waterfront for 2023 and it runs from July 19 to Aug. 30, rain or shine.

Ellie Longbottom, Selkirk Culture Coordinator, says vendors selling vegetables, honey, home-made jams, soaps and clothing – just to name a few will return to the Waterfront.

And according to Longbottom, it’s exciting for several reasons.

“The Waterfront is a beautiful venue and it has an excellent vibe for the market and on top of that it will allow us to have even more venues, so there’s more local shopping options,” Longbottom said.

Free yoga and walking tours available

“We’ve also got some new additions to the market so depending on your preference you’ll want to bring your yoga mat or your walking shoes.”

Free yoga at the market is a partnership with Glow Fitness and the classes begin on the second Wednesday of the market run. From July 26 to Aug. 30, from noon to 12:45pm make the most of your lunch break and embrace the power of movement.

Glow Fitness’s experienced instructors will guide you through invigorating yoga flows that will leave you feeling refreshed and energized. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to connect with nature, unwind, and get active – all for free!

Also new this year, Red River North Tourism will be offering walking tours that will alternate from week to week, taking participants on a journey through the city’s rich history, culture and murals. Dates and times for the guided tours will be announced soon.

Media sponsor for the market is the Selkirk Record.

Angie Neeth returns as Market Coordinator for the sixth year, and she’s as enthusiastic as if it was the first year.

“I’m thrilled for another Selkirk Port Market this summer!  After all these years it’s still exciting and humbling to see the community come out, enjoy the atmosphere and support the vendors,” Neeth said.

“Markets are so important in our communities because of the vendors themselves, who can source local ingredients and goods from each other. This aids in the production of products and in attempts to keep costs down for the consumers. It’s exciting to have the Market back to its original location at the Waterfront, where there is more space available, allowing us to have up to 55 vendors for this summer.”

Plenty of vendors, plenty of options for everyone

Each Wednesday the Market will have different vendors, and a list of the vendors will be provided on Facebook Selkirk Port Market and Instagram @selkirk_port_market each week.

There will be everything from everyone’s favourites – the fresh vegetables, to hand crafted jewelry, home-made baking, jams, jellies, tea, clothing, body care, dog treats, buskers, food trucks, you name it, the Market will have it.  Cochrane Creek Farm, will not only have a wide variety of their pork cuts and sausages, but will also be there with their new hotdog cart each Wednesday.

There will be a spot to drop off non-perishable food items for the Selkirk Food Bank.  Non-perishable food items, and monetary donations of any denomination are graciously accepted to help those needing food throughout the community.

Selkirk Fair Trade will have a booth set up at the market and will provide information about Selkirk’s status as a Fair Trade Town as well as resources on the benefits of buying Fair Trade. The city earned the designation of Fair Trade Town in 2017. That same year, the City of Selkirk was named Fair Trade Workplace of the Year.

Returning this year is the United for Literacy reading tent, times two. The popular summertime reading program will feature two tents during the market with the aim of reducing the loss of knowledge and skills between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next.

Focusing on literacy in a broad sense, the staff engage children in fun and inclusive activities based on diverse learning styles and reading levels. Reading Tent sessions engage learners in crafts, reading circles, movement-based activities, and end with participants selecting a free book to take home!

There will be buskers each week, and there’s still a few spots available so if you’re looking to become Selkirk famous, apply online here.

“We’re excited to have the Selkirk Port Market back on the Waterfront and we’re really thrilled to showcase the rich culture of the city, the talented artists and give everyone the opportunity to share in the goods offered by the vendors,” Longbottom said.

All those involved with Selkirk Port Market are excited to see everyone again and looking forward to a wonderful seven market weeks ahead!
