Selkirk Age Friendly Committee: Building a Community for All Ages 

Who We Are 

The Selkirk Age Friendly Committee (AFC) was formed in 2009 to make Selkirk a more inclusive, accessible, and supportive home for residents of every age. We serve as a key voice in shaping Selkirk’s vision of respect and inclusion, bridging the gap between residents, service providers, and municipal departments.    

Our Pillars of Focus 

Our work is guided by the World Health Organization’s eight ‘Age-Friendly Dimensions.’ We use these benchmarks to look at every part of city life through an age-friendly lens, constantly asking: How can we make this better for people of all ages?  

  • Outdoor Spaces: Safe, accessible buildings and public parks. 
  • Transportation: Affordable and easy ways to get around town. 
  • Housing: Options that allow residents to age comfortably in their community. 
  • Social Participation: Events that keep people of all ages connected. 
  • Respect & Inclusion: Ensuring seniors are valued and included in city life. 
  • Civic Engagement: Accessible volunteer and employment opportunities. 
  • Communication: Clear, timely info on events and emergency safety. 
  • Health Services: Supporting the programs that keep our residents healthy. 

What We Do for You 

While our specific projects evolve, our core activities always include: 

  • Advocacy: We maintain long-term partnerships to accessible options are available for the community.    
  • Community Recognition: We celebrate local businesses and organizations that make Selkirk more welcoming and accessible to people of all ages.    
  • Public Education: We organize workshops and share resources on vital topics like health, safety, and community services.    
  • Infrastructure Improvements: We advocate for and help fund physical enhancements to our city, such as public seating, accessible pathways, and improved park facilities.    
  • Community Connections: We foster partnerships between local organizations to ensure seniors and youth remain active participants in city life.    
  • Community Events & Fundraising: We organize local celebrations that bring neighbors together while raising money for age-friendly projects. We hold seasonal fundraisers that allow us to reinvest in the city’s accessibility and age-friendly needs.    

Our Legacy 

Since 2009, our committee has helped Selkirk achieve its official “Age Friendly” designation. We continue to work toward a future of improved infrastructure, stronger partnerships, and a more connected, compassionate community for everyone.
