The City of Selkirk focuses on fire safety and emergency preparedness for all residents. A dedicated team of volunteer firefighters is available around the clock to respond to emergencies. Fire Chief Corey Gagne and Deputy Fire Chief Joe Bukoski lead ongoing training and manage staffing to ensure effective service. The Selkirk Fire Department supports nearby communities through Mutual Aid agreements when they need additional assistance.
Checking Burn Restrictions
Before starting any fire, check if there’s a municipal fire ban in effect. To verify current burning restrictions in Selkirk or other Manitoba municipalities, you can use the interactive map provided by the Province of Manitoba:
- Visit the Current Municipal Burning Restrictions page.
- Click on the magnifying glass icon on the left-hand toolbar of the map.
- Select “City of Selkirk” from the drop-down list of municipalities.
- Click “Apply” to view detailed information on burning restrictions in Selkirk.

Open Fires
PROHIBITED BURNING | No burning of leaves, straw, garden waste, or other materials in pits, barrels, or incinerators within town limits. |
ALLOWED BURNING | Enclosed incinerators are permitted if they meet Manitoba Building Code and do not cause a nuisance. |
SPECIAL PERMITS | The Fire Chief may issue conditional burning permits, at their discretion, for burns between noon and 8:00 p.m. under special circumstances. To apply, submit a completed permit to the Selkirk Fire Department for review. A copy of the burn permit can be found in Schedule “B” of Open Fires By-law 4832. |
BACKYARD FIRES | Allowed from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight. Must be attended and should not cause a nuisance. |
UNATTENDED FIRES | Must be fully extinguished when not being watched. |
Firepit Requirements
DISTANCE FROM BUILDINGS | Firepits must be at least 15 feet (4.5 meters) from any building or combustible materials. |
SUPERVISION | Must always be attended by an adult. |
NUISANCE PREVENTION | Must not disturb neighbors or create excessive smoke. |
EXTINGUISHMENT | Must be fully extinguished when not in use. |
