In efforts to reduce the amount of organic waste going into our landfill, the City of Selkirk encourages residents to partake in home composting.

What is Composting?

Composting is nature’s way of recycling by biodegrading organic waste such as fruits and vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, wood, feathers and more and turns it into a valuable organic fertilizer.

This is a natural biological process. The effectiveness of the composting process is dependent upon the environmental conditions present within the composting system such as oxygen, temperature, moisture, organic matter and the size and activity of microbial populations.

Why Compost?

Composting reduces the amount or organic waste that is collected each week and brought to the landfill resulting in lower tipping fees.

It’s easy, inexpensive or free and the end result is a natural, nutrient rich “super soil” that can be added to gardens and lawns and can even assist with weed and pest control!

How can I get involved?

It’s easiest to have one small bin inside of your home (kitchen) and a composting bin outside in your yard. We encourage you to empty your indoor bin into your outdoor bin EACH day.

Compost bins can be purchased from a local hardware store, online or home and garden stores.

For composting tips see Home Composting Handbook to help get you started and information on how to maintain the compost material until it is ready for use.
