Citizens may have noticed, or may notice, a temporary increase in water hardness. This change is the result of an unscheduled repair to the lime softener at the water treatment facility.
The City of Selkirk wishes to assure everyone that the drinking water continues to meet all provincial and federal requirements and remains safe to drink, cook with, and use as normal.
All of Selkirk’s drinking water comes from groundwater wells. The white residue residents may notice is calcium, which is a naturally occurring mineral found in well water. This is temporary and will not negatively impact the performance of home appliances for the duration it is present.
Water softening is an additional treatment step and is not required for safe drinking water.
The repair is anticipated to take up to two weeks.
