Here is this week’s infrastructure update for current projects underway in the City of Selkirk.
🔹Main Street North Landscaping & Naturalization
The city is working to naturalize the boulevards and medians by planting shrubs, wildflowers, and prairie grasses. The straw that citizens may be wondering about is covering the newly planted seeds to help them become established and to keep moisture in the soil.
You may also have seen “rain gardens” at some intersections. These are designed to capture stormwater run off to water the plants inside as well as to filter contaminants before entering and alleviating the city’s stormwater sewer system.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE: that the planting on boulevards, medians, in the rain gardens and in benches is not complete and will continue to take place throughout the summer and into the fall as plants become available. The plants will also take a couple of years to become established and look as intended.
Naturalized landscapes are better for the environment and require far less staff maintenance once established.
The contractor responsible for the planting and maintenance of all that has been and will be planted is watering and caring for all trees, plants and seeded areas. We are aware that some of the plants appear to be dying. As with any project of this size, plant loss is inevitable and anything that does not make it will be replanted.
The city is continuing to meet with the contractor to observe progress and assess issues with some of the plantings. A vegetative biologist consultant will be assessing the area this week.
Some roadway deficiencies from last year’s reconstruction project were identified and will be addressed over the next couple of weeks.
Two median barriers, located at Morris Avenue and Queen Avenue, will be replaced with shorter versions.
Temporary closures or lane reductions may be in place — please follow posted signage.
🔹 200 Block of Taylor Avenue & 400 Block of Eveline Street
Temporary water connections to affected houses have been completed. If residents have water connection issues, they should contact Buus Construction at 204-941-0926. Work is ongoing on the installation of the waterline.
There will be no parking on Taylor effective July 25th at 8:00 until further notice. Driveway access will not be affected.
🔹 Mercy Street Bike Lane & Resurfacing
Crews are working on the Mercy Bike Lane between Manchester Avenue and Strathnaver Avenue. There may be intermittent lane closures for minimal underground work between Strathnaver Avenue and Pacific Avenue.
Mill and fill between Strathnaver Avenue and Pacific Avenue is anticipated to start the week of August 4th and will take about 3 weeks to complete.
As for all infrastructure projects, please stay clear of construction equipment.
