What is an Emergency?

An emergency can look different for everyone. If you’re a homeowner, it might mean a flooded basement or a power outage that spoils the food in your fridge. If you run a business, an emergency could shut your doors and halt operations. For the City, a major snowstorm might prompt officials to open a reception center to support residents. No matter the situation, preparing helps you respond quickly and recover more easily.

What Can I Do to Prepare?

Create and Emergency Plan for your household using the City’s Be Prepared Guide.

The Be Prepared Guide leads your household through emergency preparation and provides a space to store all your important information. The guide includes:

  • Basic information about you household demographics
  • Important emergency contact information
  • Helping you create a household evacuation plan and safe meeting places
  • How to create an emergency kit
  • Planning for you neighbors, kids and pets
  • Home utilities and fire safety
  • A place to store copies of important documents

Store this document in a safe, easily accessible location, along with your emergency kit.

Create a plan for your family in case you get separated during an emergency. Identify someone your children can call for help or information. Choose a trusted person outside the affected area to serve as your family’s emergency contact. Share that person’s name, address, and phone number with every family member so everyone knows who to contact.

Check your insurance coverage before an emergency happens. Use it to replace lost items and cover expenses if you have to leave your home. When you set up proper coverage in advance, you protect yourself and your family from future losses.

How Does the City Prepare?
