Child on swing at a park

Daerwood Village Park is a neighbourhood park in the east end of the City. It offers a playground, a swing set and seating areas. This small park is perfect for the whole family to get outside.

In the early 1900s, this park was home to a planned summer-cottage development by the Selkirk Land and Investment Company. The beautifully designed subdivision featured half of the lots having front on the Red River while the others faced avenues that parallel or look onto the river. Created with the desires of wealthily Winnipeggers in mind, the company stipulated that any cottage constructed there had to be worth at least $1000.

In 1912 the promotors sponsored a contest to name the subdivision with a prize of $50. The winning name was ‘Daerwood Park’. There was one problem with this subdivision though. Almost every spring ice drifted down the Red and would jam at Sugar Island and flood the low-lying land behind it. Those who purchased lot in the new subdivision got more than their fair share of river frontage.
