WHEREAS: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term that describes the range of effects that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol prenatally. FASD is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder and can impact a person’s learning, physical, cognitive, behavior and development; and
WHEREAS: diagnosis, treatment, and support require an interdisciplinary team approach; and
WHEREAS: it is important to bring attention to the risks of prenatal alcohol exposure, raise awareness of the impact of FASD on individuals, families, and communities and encourage all Manitobans to learn more about the disorder and its effects; and
WHEREAS: International FASD Awareness Day is recognized each year on September 9th, representing the ninth day of the ninth month of the year to symbolize the nine months of pregnancy.
THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED that I, Larry Johannson, Mayor of the City of Selkirk, in the Province of Manitoba do hereby proclaim September 9th, 2022 to be “Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day” in Selkirk and commend its thoughtful observance to all citizens.
