Warm summer weather makes people across Manitoba think about staying cool. Year after year, people flock to swimming pools or natural bodies of water across the province to get wet and beat the heat. Unfortunately, that also means that every year we see a spike in drowning deaths.
The Lifesaving Society designates July 17-23, 2022 as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to focus community and media attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention.
This year, the City of Selkirk will be offering free programming as part of this national initiative. View details and registration below.
Free Lifejacket Fittings – July 19 1:00-7:30 pm
Not sure if your lifejacket fits properly? Have questions? Not sure what to buy for your kids? Pop in to the Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad between 1-7:30 pm and our Pool Supervisors will properly fit you for a lifejacket, provide recommendations and answer any of your lifejacket/PFD questions! Free; no registration required.
Free Family Swim Safety Day (Swim to Survive) – July 20th 7:00-7:30 pm
Children, teens, adults and family are encouraged to attend a free swim class. During this 30 minute lesson, participants will learn 3 water-related skills used in drowning prevention. Free for all, but pre-registration is required. Please click HERE to register. Ages 6 and up (residents & non-residents). First come, first serve. Spaces are limited.
Social Media Campaign – July 17-23, 2022
Post a photo of you being water smart to your social media using the following hashtags: #ndpw2022 and #WaterSmartSelkirk. Don’t forget to tag the City of Selkirk in your photos.
Some photo ideas might include: wearing a lifejacket while boating, being within arm’s reach of your children in the water, or participating in swimming lessons with a certified instructor! Remember – posting on social media and taking photos should never take away from your supervision duties or safety when around water. Share and post to social media when it is safe to do so.
One random winner will be selected on July 25, 2022, and announced on our social media. The lucky winner will receive a water fun prize pack, filled with toys and goodies to enjoy on your next beach/pool day!
All participants are asked to screen prior to attending the program. Click HERE to view screening information.
Anyone experiencing Covid-19 symptoms are asked to stay home and not attend programming.
At this time, all City of Selkirk Program participants and staff are required to wear face masks while indoors, during program time.
