It might feel like we’ve been living in the dog days of summer for more than a month now but the legitimate D.O.G Days of Summer are about to begin in earnest next week.
Selkirk’s weekly Waterfront festival kicks of Aug. 1 and features entertainment, food vendors and fresh veggies, canned goods and more for sale at the newly minted Selkirk Port Market that runs from 11 am to 2 pm.
Every Wednesday in August the City of Selkirk along with the Selkirk Record present D.O.G Days of Summer at The Waterfront, sponsored by Sunova and Selkirk Biz. This year the market will be run by Angie Neeth, a long-time vendor at several markets, including the Selkirk Waterfront.
Neeth, who will be selling her Kake Fraüelein products, which consists of traditional and German-inspired baking, said she’s excited to take the helm at the Selkirk market.
“I am head over heels thrilled about taking on this project,” Neeth said.
“Having been a part of the Selkirk Market in the past as a vendor, I have found it to be a great place to showcase my products. The people that come and visit and take part in the market are second to none and very supportive of what everyone has to offer.”
Neeth said with the Market opening just over a week away, things are shaping up quite nicely.
“Applications are coming in strong so it’s promising to be a great event in conjunction with the D.O.G Days of Summer. There are some returning vendors along some new vendors with quite the variety,” she said.
“From artists to bakers…there are some absolutely fantastic artists, home made natural soap, decorative wood signs and carvings, fresh vegetables and baking just to name a few.”

Get outside and enjoy the summer
Neeth takes over for Joy Sul, who ran the market for three years and built a market that’s rooted in success. An entrepreneur who also runs the Skinner’s Locks Market and is an RM of St. Andrews Councillor, Sul’s busy schedule forced her to step down this year, but she’s thrilled to learn someone new has come on board.
“It’s so exciting to see the market is continuing in Selkirk in conjunction with the D.O.G Days of Summer Event,” Sul said.
“I wish the new manager every success as I put so much work into making the market a success over the past two years and I am grateful it grew to the size it did. Thanks to all the people who came out to support the market and I thank all the vendors I have dealt with over the years and continue to deal with, because without them, there would be no markets. Best wishes to Selkirk and the opening of the Selkirk Port Market.”
Vanessa Figus, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the City of Selkirk, said they have an exciting line-up of local musicians scheduled to perform during the events, which run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Aug. 1,8,15,22 and 29. Orvis Raleigh and Kalyna Morrow-Litke kick things off on Aug. 1.
“D.O.G Days has been very successful in past years. Not only are we providing additional recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, this event contributes to the revitalization of the downtown area and encourages people to get outside and enjoy the summer,” Figus said.
“People can bring a lunch, or visit a food vendor, and really just enjoy our beautiful Waterfront and the spectacular weather we’ve been having this summer.”
Enter to win weekly prizes
Each week $50 in gift certificates to local businesses will be given away to one lucky person who drops their business card in the draw bin. On the final Wednesday, Aug. 29th, there will be a grand prize draw from all the cards that have been entered during the month.
Selkirk Biz is sponsoring an additional prize draw that will be made on the final Wednesday as well. Every time you go to the Market, you can enter your business card in a draw bin, or, if you don’t have a business card but represent a group in Selkirk, such as the Gordon Howard Centre, you can fill out a card with the group’s name on it, and the business or group with the most entries at the end of the month will win.
The prize is two VIP Reception passes for the Ball Drop on Sept. 20, and of course bragging rights!
Figus said everyone is encouraged to bring their own dogs out for D.O.G Days, and the city will have water bowls at The Waterfront to make sure our four-legged friends stay cool.
The City of Selkirk’s hydration station will be on hand to keep everyone else cool as well, so bring your refillable bottle and fill up for free.
