Larviciding is now underway for mosquito control in and around the City of Selkirk.
The City’s contractor has been busy undertaking these control efforts since the program began on April 22.
Larviciding is a treatment designed to kill immature mosquitoes while they are still developing in pools of standing water.
The larvicide chemical is applied directly onto standing water by way of a spray nozzle and can greatly reduce the number of adult mosquitoes.
There are some methods that people can follow on their own to help stem the outbreak of the summertime pests.
- Find and remove any puddles of water or standing water around your home to reduce breeding sites.
- Puncture unusable tires in the yard to prevent pools of water from forming inside them.
- If you own a bird-bath, wipe it out every few days.
