Peace Days is holding its 7th Annual Festival of Peace and Compassion – September 11 to 25, 2016. Peace Days was inspired by Rotary World Peace Partners in 2010 and grew out of a desire to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, designated as September 21st each year.
The mission of Peace Days is to promote and advance peace and compassion as well as celebrate the harmony and cultural diversity of the citizens of Manitoba.
Peace Days was inspired by Rotary World Peace Partners in 2010. Peace Days grew out of a desire to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace, designated as September 21st each year.
In 2010, Winnipeg celebrated with a Concert for Peace, where music was the medium to communicate the importance of working toward a more peaceful and compassionate society. Peace Days evolved, and in 2013 became a week-long festival with community events from the International Day of Democracy on September 15 through to the International Day of Peace on September 21.
WHEREAS The United Nations recognizes September 15 as the International Day of Democracy and September 21 as the International Day of Peace.
WHEREAS All Manitobans should have access to an array of educational opportunities that prepares them for lifelong learning and citizenship in a democratic, socially just and sustainable society.
WHEREAS The Peace Days 2016 Initiative will help students learn more about the important duties of citizens in our evolving multi-cultural democracy and about how understanding, kindness, non-violence and compassionate action is essential for a healthy, diverse and democratic society.
WHEREAS Peace Days 2016 will involve more community initiatives to educate and inspire and to advance understanding, goodwill, peace and compassionate action.
WHEREAS The City of Selkirk supports the objectives of Peace Days 2016 and is grateful for the volunteer service above self of Rotarians, the Peace Days Planning Committee and participating school communities.
WHEREAS It is also in the Public Interest for educational institutions to take the opportunity during Peace Days 2016 to begin to sow seeds of learning and inspire practices to advance the Peace Days’ objectives throughout the school year.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT KNOWN that I, Larry Johannson, Mayor of the City of Selkirk in the Province of Manitoba, do hereby proclaim September 21st to be designated as Peace Day 2016, and commend its thoughtful observance to all citizens.
