WHEREAS, older adults in Manitoba are valued members of society and deserve to live with dignity; and
WHEREAS, abuse of older adults is an ever increasing issue in our society that crosses all socio- economic boundaries; and
WHEREAS, most abuse of older adults is hidden; and
WHEREAS, ageism is a major cause of abuse of older Manitobans; and
WHEREAS, Older Manitobans deserve to be treated with respect and dignity to enable them to serve as leaders, mentors, volunteers and important and active members of this province; and
WHEREAS, preventing abuse of older people will help improve the quality of life for all older adults in Manitoba and will allow older adults to continue to live as independently as possible and contribute to the life and vibrancy of Manitoba; and
WHEREAS, empowering older persons is an effective tool in preventing the abuse of older adults;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Larry Johannson, Mayor of the City of Selkirk, Manitoba, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2016 as:
“Elder Abuse Awareness Day”
in the City of Selkirk, and encourage all of our residents to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of seniors.
